Mike Mitchell started in live-action comedy with Deuce Bigalow before moving almost entirely into animation, where he has directed Shrek Forever After, Trolls and The Lego Movie 2.

Shrek Forever After had the difficult job of ending a franchise that had run out of ideas, and it did so by using an alternate-timeline structure that gave the character something to lose.

His films are built to work on two levels at once, which is the standard demand of family animation and harder to sustain than the finished product suggests.
