Director: Ingmar Bergman
Ingmar Bergman directed more than sixty films across five decades and made faith, mortality and marriage his permanent subjects. The Seventh Seal, Persona, Cries and Whispers and Fanny and Alexander are the essential ones, and Sven Nykvist’s photography of faces is inseparable from the work. He ran Sweden’s Royal Dramatic Theatre alongside the films and wrote candidly about his own cruelty in a memoir.
