The Blob (1958 and 1988)
The Blob exists in two memorable versions. Irvin Yeaworth directed the 1958 original.
Chuck Russell directed A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, widely considered the best of the sequels, and then remade The Blob in 1988 with practical effects work that is still startling.
The Mask gave Jim Carrey the vehicle that made him a film star, using digital effects to reproduce the physics of Tex Avery cartoons.
His films sit at the point where practical effects were at their most sophisticated just before digital replaced them, and they hold up largely because of it.
