C. Edward Good is an American writing teacher and grammarian whose books on legal writing and English grammar have become standard references in law schools and writing programs. Based in the Washington, D.C. area, he has served as Counsel and Writer-in-Residence at one of the world's largest intellectual property law firms, where he runs ongoing training programs in effective writing for attorneys and paralegals.
His best-known book, Mightier Than the Sword: Powerful Writing in the Legal Profession, has been adopted as a text at many American law schools since its first edition in 1989. The book starts with the parts of speech and the verb form, walks through subordination, parallel construction, and the rhythm of strong English sentences, and finishes with the punctuation marks that hold legal prose together. Good wrote a companion volume, Mightier Than the Sword: Powerful Writing, In Class, On the Job, for writers outside the legal profession.
His grammar book A Grammar Book for You and I (Oops, Me): All the Grammar You Need to Succeed in Life, originally Who's (Oops) Whose Grammar Book, is widely used in writing programs and corporate training. He has also written The Vocabulary of Success, the legal research guide Legal Research: Without Losing Your Way, the resume guide Does Your Resume Wear Blue Jeans?, and Citing and Typing the Law, an early reference on the mechanics of legal citation.
