Pete Postlethwaite was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for In the Name of the Father, playing a father wrongly imprisoned alongside his son, and Steven Spielberg publicly called him the best actor in the world.
He worked constantly in British film and theatre with a face that could not be made handsome and did not need to be, in Brassed Off, Distant Voices Still Lives and Romeo and Juliet.
The Usual Suspects gives him Kobayashi, and The Town gave him a late villain of real menace.
He was a teacher before training as an actor, campaigned on climate issues, and died in 2011.
