Kirk Douglas played men with something clenched in them, and the jaw was the least of it. Champion, Ace in the Hole, Lust for Life and Paths of Glory all put him in the position of a man who is right and will not be quiet about it.
Ace in the Hole is the harshest thing he did, as a journalist who prolongs a rescue to extend a story, and it was a commercial failure in 1951 for exactly that reason.
As a producer on Spartacus he credited Dalton Trumbo openly by name in 1960, breaking the blacklist. He was explicit for the rest of his life that this was the thing he was proudest of.
He was nominated three times and never won a competitive Academy Award, receiving an honorary one in 1996. He lived to a hundred and three.
