Jean Arthur had a voice that cracked and caught in a way no other actress of the period had, and Frank Capra built three of his best films around it: Mr Deeds Goes to Town, You Can’t Take It with You and Mr Smith Goes to Washington.
She suffered from severe stage fright and was reportedly physically ill before takes throughout her career, which made her difficult to work with and which she never overcame. Shane was her last film.
