Eva Marie Saint won Best Supporting Actress for her first film, On the Waterfront, and North by Northwest gave her a Hitchcock lead whose loyalties the film keeps ambiguous. She worked into her nineties, appeared in Superman Returns as Martha Kent, and is among the last surviving performers of the studio era.
