Erich von Stroheim directed Greed, an enormous film the studio cut from nine hours to two, destroying the excised footage, which is among the great losses in cinema. He then worked as an actor, and Sunset Boulevard gives him Max, a former director reduced to serving the star he once made, which is uncomfortably close to his own trajectory.
