Alan Rickman made his film debut at forty-one as Hans Gruber in Die Hard, and the performance changed what an action villain could be: educated, unhurried, contemptuous, and genuinely funny.

The delivery, with pauses of a length no other actor risks, became so recognisable that it defined every part afterward, including Snape across eight Harry Potter films.

Truly Madly Deeply, Sense and Sensibility and Galaxy Quest show the range, and he is heartbreaking in Love Actually in a role built almost entirely on guilt.

He came to acting late, having worked as a graphic designer, and directed two films. He died in 2016.
